Is duct cleaning worth it?

Updated: Nov 22, 2021

“Do I need to have my ducts cleaned? Does it really help?” is a common line of questioning we hear at Ashley Heating, Water & Air.

In general, duct cleaning is a good solution in a lot of different circumstances. Let’s talk through when it does (and doesn’t) make sense to have your ducts professionally cleaned.

You want your ENTIRE heating and air conditioning system to be working properly

Before we dive specifically into whether duct cleaning makes sense for your home, we think it’s important to focus on the overall health of your heating and air conditioning system. HVAC is the lungs of your home – the system takes air in and breathes air out. Obviously, you want to keep your home’s lungs in great condition!

Keeping your entire HVAC system clean and functioning properly is vital if you want to maintain a healthy, comfortable living environment. We believe that the best thing our customers can do year after year is perform routine maintenance, install the right air filters, and ensure ductwork is properly sealed.

Duct cleaning

You may consider having your air ducts cleaned simply because it seems logical that air ducts will get dirty over time and should be cleaned occasionally.

Well, yes and no. Duct cleaning is a great way to remove debris build-up that’s keeping your HVAC system from running at maximum efficiency; however, duct cleaning should not be an ongoing issue every year or two. In general, duct cleaning is not part of normal HVAC maintenance schedules.

When to consider duct cleaning
  • Your home has never had its ducts cleaned.

  • Ducts are infested with insects or rodents.

  • Ducts are clogged with excessive amounts of dust and debris, and particles are released into your home from your supply registers (the vents located in your floors, walls or ceilings).

  • You recently performed a remodeling project that created a lot of dust and debris that got into your ductwork.

When it might not make sense

You likely not need to do duct cleaning if:

  • Your home has had its ducts cleaned in the last 5 years and doesn’t show any obvious signs of needing additional cleaning.

  • Your ductwork is properly sealed, you regularly change air filters, and you clean floor registers with a vacuum every six months.
